Wireless In Birmingham

The Birmingham region is hot! No, not in temperature but rather in wireless hotspots. With more than three hundred (300) different public WiFi locations, we’ve got a lot going for us. Not the least of which is the most prominent public (and FREE) hotspot in the Southeast! That would be none other than Vulcan, the Roman god of the Forge and now the adopted symbol for wireless Internet access in Birmingham.

Vulcan Park wireless infrastructure was activated in May 2005. Cisco Systems provided the equipment and Bright House Networks provides the Internet carriage. Vulcan Park’s hotspot (Wi-Fi access point) is free of charge and can be accessed by any visitor with a laptop or other wireless device. The coverage area is five acres of the park grounds including the patios and picnic table area. A separate wireless network is available for Vulcan Center’s special event room. Linn Park near City Hall is also a wireless hotzone courtesy of SouthernLINC.
